The Hyde Collection, Art museum in Glens Falls, United States
The Hyde Collection is an art museum in Glens Falls, New York, set inside a Classical Revival mansion built in the early 1900s. It holds European and American works spanning several centuries, displayed across both period-furnished rooms and dedicated gallery spaces.
Charlotte and Louis Hyde built the residence in 1912 and filled it with art gathered during travels across Europe. After Charlotte's death, it opened to the public in 1963, becoming one of the few house museums of its kind in the northeastern United States.
The works on display were chosen as personal possessions, not assembled by a professional curatorial team, which gives the rooms a feeling closer to a private home than a traditional gallery. Visitors often notice how paintings hang alongside furniture and decorative objects, as if the owners had just stepped out.
The museum is in a residential area a short walk from downtown Glens Falls, so it is easy to combine with a visit to the town center. Plan enough time to see both the historic mansion rooms and the newer gallery wing, as they feel quite different from each other.
A covered passage links the original mansion to a wing added in 1989, which includes an atrium and a butterfly garden tucked between the old and new sections of the building. Many visitors are caught off guard by the garden, since it sits in the middle of the museum rather than outside it.
