The Rock, Historical landmark at Northwestern University in Evanston, United States.
The Rock stands as a boulder of purple-and-white quartzite between University Hall and Harris Hall on Northwestern University's campus, functioning as a message board.
The graduating class of 1902 transported this quartzite boulder from Devil's Lake, Wisconsin, initially setting it up as a water fountain at the south end.
Students participate in painting The Rock to express opinions, advertise events, make proposals, and share messages, following a tradition that began in the 1940s.
Groups intending to paint The Rock maintain a guard position from sunrise until early morning to secure their opportunity for creative expression.
In 1989, engineers from McCormick School provided specialized epoxy to repair The Rock after it split during a 20-foot relocation for landscaping purposes.
