Toll House Inn, Restaurant site in Whitman, Massachusetts, US.

The Toll House Inn was a restaurant at 370 Bedford Street that served traditional New England meals and desserts to travelers and local diners. The location near Highway 18 and Auburn Street is marked today with a bronze plaque and the original restaurant sign.

The restaurant opened in 1930 and became the birthplace of the first chocolate chip cookie recipe in 1938. This simple creation quickly spread across the nation and changed home baking forever.

The restaurant became known across America when a cookie recipe created here changed how people bake at home. The recipe's appearance on chocolate packaging introduced millions to a simple way of making a beloved treat.

The site is easily accessible from the street and can be viewed from outside, with the plaque marking the exact location. The neighborhood allows for a leisurely walk to take in the area's character and learn about local landmarks.

The restaurant's founder received free chocolate for life from a major company in exchange for sharing the recipe on their packaging. This unusual deal marked one of the first and most memorable partnerships between a restaurant creator and a food manufacturer.
