Tioga Centre General Store, historic commercial building in New York, United States
The Tioga Centre General Store is a two-story building erected in 1849 located on Route 17C in Tioga Center, New York. Its Greek Revival style features wooden clapboard siding and a straightforward construction typical of mid-1800s stores, with minimal alterations made over the decades.
Built in 1849 by E. H. Schoonover, the store became a central fixture of the town's daily commerce for over 150 years. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 recognized its importance as one of the few surviving commercial buildings of its era in the region.
The store served as a gathering place where locals met and shared news for generations. It reflects how small-town commerce once centered community life around such meeting points.
The building is no longer in regular commercial operation but remains visible and accessible from the roadside. Visitors can view the exterior and examine its historical architecture, though interior access is currently limited.
The building once housed a telephone exchange in a small extension behind its porch, revealing how the store adapted to modern technology. It remains one of the only surviving commercial buildings of its type in the entire Tioga County area.
