United States Post Office–New London Main, Post office building in New London, Connecticut
The United States Post Office in New London is a three-story building with a steel frame, limestone on the ground floor and brick with limestone trim on the upper levels. Its design combines functional postal operations with Art Deco architectural details throughout.
This post office was built in 1934 during the Depression when many public buildings were constructed as part of economic recovery efforts. It was recognized as historically significant and added to the national register in 1986.
The main lobby shows Greek-inspired Art Deco details with colorful marble floors and paintings of whaling scenes that tell a story about the city's past. These decorations reflect how important this work was to local life and identity.
The building sits downtown at the corner of Masonic and Union Streets with parking available next to it. Visitors can easily find parking and explore the postal services along with the public architectural spaces.
The entrance features bronze Art Deco panels with eagle designs that match stone eagles and Art Deco light fixtures outside. These decorative elements and the interior murals were created in 1938 and work together as a complete artistic vision.
