University Barge Club, Rowing club at Boathouse Row, Philadelphia, US
The University Barge Club is a rowing facility housed in an asymmetrical neo-Gothic structure along Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River. The building contains two boat bays and sits at the seventh location along this historic row of boathouses.
The club was founded in 1854 and joined the Schuylkill Navy in 1865, a federation of local rowing organizations. The neo-Gothic structure received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places during the 1980s.
The club maintains ties with the University of Pennsylvania and plays an active role in the region's rowing competitions. Throughout the racing season, it hosts events that draw rowers from surrounding areas.
The facility provides training grounds and access to an established racing course on the river for its members. Its location on Boathouse Row makes it convenient to coordinate training schedules and participate in regional competitions.
The club sent athletes to compete at four consecutive Olympic Games from 1920 to 1932. This remarkable international success story is often overlooked today but remains a defining chapter in its history.
