Philadelphia Aquarium, Zoo in Philadelphia, United States
Philadelphia Aquarium is an animal facility focusing on marine life along the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania, covering a large site. The facility includes several indoor and outdoor areas with tanks, terrariums, and enclosures for fish, reptiles, and other animal species.
A local society presented initial plans for construction in 1859, but the start was delayed several years by the Civil War. After the war ended, the project resumed and the facility opened gradually to visitors over the following decades.
The name dates from a time when this facility was part of a larger plan to promote natural science and public education. The outdoor pools attract many families who come to watch sea lions and other aquatic animals during feeding times.
The facility opens on weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00 and on weekends from 09:30 to 17:00. Guided tours take place several times throughout the day and help with orientation on the large site.
Certain areas feature adjusted lighting that allows nocturnal animals to follow their natural rhythm. These zones remain dimmed during the day so visitors can see animals in their most active phase.
