The Wal-Lex Recreation Center was a large entertainment complex in Waltham featuring sixty candlepin bowling lanes, a roller skating rink, and multiple entertainment facilities spread across several floors. The lanes were constructed with traditional wooden surfaces and used manual scoring systems.
The facility opened on July 4, 1947 with twenty bowling lanes and expanded through several additions during the 1950s and 1960s. It remained a recreational destination for over five decades before being demolished in 2002 to make room for retail development.
The center was a gathering place where families and friends came together to bowl and skate, shaping the leisure habits of the local community for decades. It represented a social space where people of all ages could enjoy entertainment activities together.
The center was easily accessible by car and conveniently located on Lexington Street between Waltham and Lexington. The traditional wooden lanes and manual scoring made the bowling experience straightforward and easy to enjoy for all skill levels.
The center served as a filming location for the television show Candlepins for Cash when it moved to WXNE-TV Channel 25 in 1982. This connection to local television made the bowling center a recognizable place for viewers throughout the region.
