The district contains numerous structures from the 1880s, including the Jenkins Miller McFarland House from 1793, which stands as Rockville's earliest surviving building.
The architectural collection includes Federal, Late Victorian, and Stick style buildings, representing the residential development patterns of early twentieth-century Maryland.
The district maintains walking paths for visitors to explore the neighborhood's historical structures while providing access to local research materials through historical societies.
The former Woodlawn Hotel, later known as Chestnut Lodge Sanitarium, remained a central structure in the district until its destruction by fire in 2009.
