Whaleback, Winter sports complex in Enfield, New Hampshire, United States.
Whaleback is a ski resort in Enfield, New Hampshire, with a summit around 1,800 feet (549 meters) and a vertical drop of about 700 feet (213 meters). It has around 30 trails, most of them lit for night skiing, and one long signature run that covers nearly a mile of the mountain.
Whaleback opened in the mid-20th century as a small ski area serving the communities of the upper Connecticut River Valley in New Hampshire. It has stayed a locally run operation over the decades, without growing into a large commercial resort.
The mountain draws families from nearby towns who return every winter weekend, making it a regular part of their cold-season routine. The slopes feel familiar and unhurried, with a crowd that tends to know one another.
The resort is open Tuesday through Sunday, with night skiing starting in the afternoon on most evenings. Arriving early on weekends gives you the quietest time on the slopes before the crowds build up.
Whaleback can cover the vast majority of its terrain with machine-made snow, which is unusual for a resort of its size in the region. This means the season can open and stay open even in years when natural snowfall is sparse.
