Zion Poplars Baptist Church

The building was constructed in 1894 during the Reconstruction Era as one of the oldest independent African American congregations in Gloucester County. Its founding emerged during a period when Black communities in Virginia were establishing their own religious institutions.

The name refers to four poplar trees still standing on the grounds, which mark where the first congregation members gathered to worship during their early years.

The church building sits on T.C. Walker Road in Gloucester and is an accessible landmark showcasing 19th-century architecture. Visitors can view the exterior and grounds to appreciate the historical significance of the site.

Frank Braxton, a formerly enslaved man, hand-carved the sanctuary interior elements and demonstrated exceptional woodworking skill. His handcrafted details are a testament to the artistic ability and resilience of someone who created beauty amid challenging circumstances.
