Johnson University, Private Christian university based in Tennessee
Johnson University is a private Bible college in Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee, focused on religious studies and theological education. The campus spans over 400 acres with simple, functional buildings and offers bachelor, master, and associate degree programs including Bible studies, ministry, theology, mathematics, music, and psychology.
The school was founded in 1893 by Ashley S. Johnson and was originally called the School of the Evangelists to help young men from poor backgrounds spread the gospel. It began as a correspondence school in 1886 and later developed into a full residential college, renamed Johnson Bible College in 1909 to honor its founder.
The university's name honors Ashley S. Johnson, its founder and local preacher whose vision still shapes the school. The community centers on living out faith together, with many students actively participating in church activities and community service as a visible part of daily campus life.
The campus is quiet and focused on study and faith, with simple buildings and green spaces that invite exploration. Many teachers live on campus, making it easy for students to find help, and student dormitories are among the best in the country.
The college was one of the first two schools officially recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a distinction that traces back to its early years. It pioneered distance learning through mail starting in 1886, long before online education existed, making theological training accessible to people who could not travel.
