Sedgwick County Courthouse, Art Deco county courthouse in Julesburg, Colorado.
Sedgwick County Courthouse is a three-story building in Art Deco style with multi-hued buff brick walls and terra cotta trim throughout. The central section is flanked by two-story wings on each side and features geometric patterns and sunrise motifs worked into the terra cotta elements.
The building was constructed between 1938 and 1939 through a federal New Deal program and replaced an earlier courthouse from 1904. This new structure was built during the economic hardship of the Great Depression.
The courthouse represents how public buildings were designed and built during the 1930s with careful craftsmanship visible throughout. The spaces show how court facilities were equipped and the value placed on hand-finished surfaces and materials.
The courthouse is located on Cedar Street and continues to function as an administrative center for the county with courtroom areas and jail facilities. The architecture and accessibility are structured according to the building's age and design.
The new building was deliberately designed with economical materials and designs that matched the financial constraints of the New Deal programs. These cost-saving measures resulted in a reduced but stylish aesthetic that remains characteristic of the building today.
