Wapack Trail, Hiking trail in New Hampshire, US.
The Wapack Trail is a 21-mile hiking route that runs from Mount Watatic in Massachusetts to North Pack Monadnock in New Hampshire, crossing mountain forests and open summits. The path links several peaks together and moves through shifting landscapes with viewpoints and denser woodland sections.
The route was established in 1923 when Allen Chamberlain and Albert Annett worked with local residents to create a mountain connection. This early development made it one of the established long-distance hiking paths in the region.
The name Wapack combines 'Wa' from Mount Watatic and 'Pack' from North Pack Monadnock, showing how local mountain names are linked together in this region. Along the way, hikers encounter stone cairns and markers that recall the long tradition of mountain walking here.
The first part of the route requires good water preparation, as the initial 10 miles cross five summits without water sources. Hikers should carry enough water and plan conditions accordingly at the beginning.
The trail attracts runners who use it for regional running races and ultramarathons, including an 18-mile event on Labor Day. These running events have given it a reputation as a challenging course within the running community.
