Niagara County Courthouse and County Clerk's Office

The Niagara County Courthouse is a government complex in Lockport consisting of two connected sections that blend architectural styles from different periods. The older wing features limestone walls with Classical Revival details, while the later addition incorporates Second Empire characteristics along with early 20th-century modifications.

The County Clerk's Office was built first in the 1850s as a limestone structure. The courthouse building itself was added around 30 years later, and both received additional expansions in the early 1900s as the county's needs grew.

The complex functions as the hub where legal proceedings occur and residents conduct essential administrative tasks like registering property changes and vital records. Two separate buildings from different eras stand side by side, each reflecting how government operations were valued in its time.

The complex is located at two addresses in downtown Lockport and is easily accessible on foot from the main street area. Keep in mind this is an active government building where certain sections may not be open to the public at all times.

The exterior clearly shows two distinct building periods side by side, where the original limestone structure visibly contrasts with the later additions and modifications. This direct comparison allows visitors to read architectural change literally on the building's walls.
