Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area, State recreation area in Finger Lakes Region, New York.
Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area is a state park in the Finger Lakes region that covers 1,550 acres (627 hectares). The site offers over 22 miles (35 kilometers) of trails through forests and meadows, with restrooms and picnic facilities scattered throughout.
The area began in 1962 when Harriet Hollister Spencer, a Rochester horticulturist known for her rose breeding work, left 679 acres of land to the state. This initial donation became the foundation for the recreation area that exists today.
The area is maintained by the Rochester Cross Country Ski Foundation, which grooms trails and runs winter sports programs for beginners and families. This commitment shows how central the place is to the local winter sports community.
The area is open from sunrise to sunset and offers restrooms, picnic tables, and grilling areas throughout the grounds. Hunting is permitted but requires proper New York State licensing and documentation.
Because of its elevation, the area receives significantly more snow than surrounding regions, making it a favored destination for cross-country skiing teams. These natural conditions have made it the primary training ground for winter athletes in the area.
