Raven Knob Scout Reservation, Scout reservation in Surry County, North Carolina, United States.
Raven Knob Scout Reservation is a 3,200-acre facility near Mount Airy with thirty-six campsites divided into three sections: Ridge, Hill, and Valley, all surrounding Lake Sobotta. The Ridge areas feature permanent shelters with electricity, while the Hill section offers tent sites with picnic shelters by the water.
The Old Hickory Council established this reservation in 1954 after selecting the Mount Airy location as an alternative to the previous Camp Lasater. This founding created a new regional base for scout camping and outdoor education programs.
The campsite names reflect Native American tribes and historical figures such as Buffalo Bill, Crazy Horse, and Shawnee. This choice shapes how visitors experience the grounds and connects them to regional heritage as they move through different areas.
The layout is easy to navigate with clear signage marking the different zones, letting visitors move easily between Ridge, Hill, and Valley sections. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and watch weather conditions, especially when spending time near the lake.
The Harry R. Vaughn Sr. Dining Hall was built in 2000 to seat thousands of summer campers, while the former dining building now serves as a Program Center. This conversion shows how the facility adapted to growing numbers while expanding its facilities.
