North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry Complex
North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry Complex, Historic granite quarry in Mount Airy, North Carolina, United States.
The North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry Complex is an industrial site spanning a large area with approximately 22 buildings, including a cutting shed built in 1927 and an office building from 1928. The facility was designed to handle the full process of extracting, processing, and shipping granite blocks.
The quarry was established in 1889 and became one of the nation's major granite suppliers. It continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century as demand for stone increased for major construction projects.
The granite quarry supplied stone for major buildings across the country, shaping how significant American structures were built and giving the place a role in the nation's development.
The site is located east of Mount Airy along NC 103 and spans a large area that you can observe from public vantage points. The quarry remains operational, so viewing is best done from designated areas away from active mining work.
This is one of the world's largest open-face granite quarries still active in mining operations today, making it a living example of how industrial stone extraction continues in modern times. Visitors can observe modern equipment working on a site with more than a century of history.
