Pilot Mountain

Pilot Mountain is an isolated summit in Surry County featuring two distinct peaks that rise prominently from the surrounding landscape. The taller peak reaches about 1,400 feet above the terrain and displays exposed rock faces alongside patches of vegetation.

The Saura people named this place Jomeokee and used it as a navigational guide for their journeys across the region. This early use as a landmark demonstrates how long it has served as a recognizable feature of the landscape.

The mountain has served as a landmark and source of pride for generations of people in the region. Visitors can sense how deeply it matters to locals through the care taken to preserve and share its story.

The state park features a network of marked trails starting from the visitor center that lead to overlooks, climbing areas, and camping facilities. These trails are well-signed, making it easy to navigate between different activities and activity levels.

This formation is a quartzite monadnock that stands alone in the landscape as a rounded knob rising from a depression in the surrounding terrain. This geological feature resulted from the erosion of softer rocks over millions of years, leaving behind this harder stone.
