Bowman Farm, Historic farmstead in Boones Mill, Virginia.
Bowman Farm is a historic farmstead on the southern slopes of Cahas Mountain, stretching across 700 acres of cleared land and forest. The main house was built from brick with Georgian-style interiors, and the property includes multiple outbuildings such as a log barn, frame structure, granary, and family cemetery.
The main house was built in 1833 and received a frame addition around 1900 on its east side. This expansion shows how the family and its needs changed over time.
The property holds meaning within the Brethren community, as local German Baptists gathered here for religious services during the 1830s. The spaces show how daily life and spiritual practice were intertwined for these families.
The farmstead sits along Cahas Mountain Road and can be explored on foot, with the various buildings showing rural life across the property. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the land is hilly and some buildings are reached along unpaved paths.
The farmhouse features hinged partitions that could be raised to create larger spaces for religious gatherings. This clever design allowed one building to serve as both a home and a meeting place.
