Rock Castle

Rock Castle is a Queen Anne style manor house in Goochland County with one and a half stories, five bays across the front, and clipped gable ends. The building features two interior end chimneys that formed part of its heating structure.

Charles Fleming received the patent for the Rock Castle land in 1718, and his son Tarleton Fleming built the house during the 1730s. The property represented an early example of establishing manor estates in this region of Virginia.

The house displays architectural features typical of 18th-century Virginia estates built for wealthy landowners of that era. The interior woodwork and staircase reflect the craftsmanship that the Fleming family sought when constructing their residence.

The house is visible from public roads in the county and can be viewed from the roadside. Access is limited since this is a registered historic site.

The entire building was moved several hundred feet from its original location in 1935 to preserve it from destruction. This remarkable feat demonstrates how much that era valued the historical importance of the house.
