Temple House of Israel, Reform Jewish congregation in Staunton, Virginia
The Temple House of Israel features twin towers, arched openings supported by columns, and intricate Mercer tiles throughout its Moorish Revival design at North Market Street.
Major Alexander Hart established the congregation in 1876, and after meeting in members' homes for eight years, they moved to a building on Kalorama Street.
The synagogue windows, designed by Charles Connick of Boston, incorporate plants from Israel, reflecting the connection between the congregation and its ancestral homeland.
Regular Shabbat services take place on the first Friday evening at 7:00 PM and the third Saturday morning at 10:00 PM each month, except during July.
The temple building, completed in 1925 by Sam Collins of T.J. Collins & Sons, combines Early Assyrian elements with Reform Jewish architectural requirements.
