Yellow Sulphur Springs, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Yellow Sulphur Springs is a historic resort in Virginia dating to the early 1800s that centers on natural mineral springs. The grounds still contain original-era structures including the main hotel with a mid-19th century galleried facade, three rows of cottages, a historic bowling alley, and a polygonal gazebo positioned over the spring where visitors can gather.
The resort was developed in the early 1800s by Charles Taylor and later expanded by Armistead W. Forrest, with the name changing to "Yellow Sulphur Springs" around 1850. It became a popular destination for wealthy visitors throughout the 1800s, and in 1926 a group of Black businessmen from Roanoke purchased it, operating it as one of the largest African American-owned resorts in the country until 1929.
The name "Yellow Sulphur Springs" refers to the mineral waters that define the resort and were once believed to hold healing powers. Today the grounds stand as a quiet record of how different groups found meaning in this place across generations, from wealthy visitors seeking leisure to the African American community who operated it as a space for their own community gathering and rest.
The property is located in Montgomery County near Christiansburg and surrounded by trees and green land, creating a peaceful setting as you walk through the grounds. Many buildings are privately owned so visitors should respect the privacy of owners while viewing the historic structures from the road or enjoying the outdoor surroundings.
Between 1926 and 1929 the resort was operated by Black businessmen from Roanoke and became one of the largest African American-owned resorts in the country during segregation. The buildings and structures from that period still stand today, showing the self-reliance and community spirit of Black entrepreneurs who created a thriving destination when travel options elsewhere were deeply restricted.
