The cemetery opened in 1855 after Hancock Cemetery reached capacity, with Charles Francis Adams Sr. purchasing the first two plots on May 5, 1856.
The Veterans Section contains memorials dedicated to service members from multiple conflicts, including the Civil War Monument established in 1868.
The cemetery maintains records of over 38,000 memorials, with 93 percent of the graves documented through photographs on the Find A Grave platform.
