Hancock Town Hall and Fire Hall, Municipal hall and fire station in Hancock, Michigan.
Hancock Town Hall and Fire Hall is a municipal and fire station building on Quincy Street constructed from red Jacobsville Sandstone with a square tower topped by a belfry. The structure features a gable roof and continues to house the city clerk's office, council chambers, and emergency services.
The building was completed in 1899 by E.E. Grip and Company of Ishpeming during a period of rapid growth in Hancock. Its construction reflected the city's economic prosperity at that time.
The building shows a blend of Richardsonian Romanesque and Dutch and Flemish architectural details, especially in the diagonally patterned glass of the main arched window. These design elements give the town hall its distinctive character in the local landscape.
The building is easily accessible from the street and located centrally in town. Visitors can view and photograph the exterior architecture from the sidewalk, though interior access is limited to municipal business.
The building received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1977. This dual designation highlights its significance for regional architectural heritage.
