A & P Food Stores Building, United States historic place
The A & P Food Stores Building is a brick commercial structure in St. Louis built in the 1940s with Art Deco style marked by streamlined shapes and geometric details. It was among the first stores in the city to offer parking and enable quick shopping trips for customers with cars.
The building was constructed in 1940 by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, and belonged to a chain of about 84 stores in the city. Most of these stores closed in the late 1970s, but this building stands among the few that survive today.
The building sits on Delmar Boulevard, a busy street that still hosts shops and restaurants today. It was a place where neighbors met and handled daily shopping before the era of large supermarkets changed how people bought food.
The building sits on Delmar Boulevard in the city center and is easily accessible. The location allows time to observe the architecture from the 1940s and examine its details on the exterior walls and windows.
The building was designed by Saum Architects, a local firm that gave it a distinct look compared to other stores of the era. It was among the first stores where customers could buy many different foods in one place, saving time and changing daily shopping habits.
