Crittenden Farm, Historic farm complex in Ashland County, Ohio
Crittenden Farm is a working farm complex spread across approximately 665 acres of agricultural land with structures from the late 1800s. The main residence blends Renaissance Revival and Italianate architectural styles, while the full ensemble includes fourteen buildings, a family cemetery, and a section of original forest.
The property was established in 1882 by Alvin Crittenden and grew into a major center for sheep breeding. Animals raised here were shipped throughout the United States and even to South Africa, giving the farm regional importance.
The property shows how prosperous farmers of the late 1800s built their homes and organized their land. The architectural style and arrangement of buildings reflect the wealth that sheep breeding brought to the family.
The site is located on rural grounds with uneven paths between the historic buildings. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the multiple structures and the forest section on the property.
The farmhouse preserves numerous original interior elements from the 1880s, from woodwork to furnishing details. These preserved spaces offer a rare glimpse into how prosperous farmers of that era actually lived day to day.
