Camp Stanton, Civil War training facility in Lynnfield, Massachusetts.
Camp Stanton was a Civil War training facility near Suntaug Lake with streets lined with cookhouses and military training grounds. The grounds housed multiple infantry regiments and artillery batteries during its years of operation.
The facility was established in 1861 as Camp Schouler and renamed Camp Stanton in 1862 to honor United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. During World War I, it was repurposed as Camp Houston to serve as a mobilization point for Massachusetts troops.
The site served as a training hub for Massachusetts militia infantry regiments. The barracks played a key role in preparing local troops for active service.
The grounds are located near Lynnfield and are best visited during warmer months when the training fields are most accessible. It is helpful to check ahead since not all portions of the historic grounds are open year-round.
A portion of the original camp grounds covering several acres was donated to the Town of Boxford in 1955 for historical preservation. This preserved section remains a memorial to the region's military history.
