Pow-Wow Oak Tree, Historic oak tree in Belvidere, Lowell, Massachusetts.
The Pow-Wow Oak Tree was an oak at the intersection of Clark Road in Belvidere that lived over 300 years and dominated the neighborhood with its wide branches. The location is now marked by a granite monument and stone markers at 273 Clark Road that show where this notable tree once stood.
The area served as a gathering place for the Wamesit group for centuries before gaining importance to colonists in the 1700s. During the Revolutionary War, soldiers heading to Lexington traveled past this historic tree on their route.
The name references gatherings held here by members of the Wamesit tribe. Today the site serves as a place where visitors can connect with the area's Native American heritage.
The site is easy to reach and sits right alongside a road with clear ground markers. It remains open at all times and requires no special equipment or preparation for a brief visit.
A section of the original trunk has been permanently displayed at Peter W. Reilly Elementary School since 2015. This remnant allows school children and visitors to see the wood from this centuries-old tree firsthand.
