Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Professional theater company in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States.
The Merrimack Repertory Theatre is a professional theater company performing in the Nancy L. Donahue Theatre, an intimate 279-seat venue housed within Liberty Hall. The program combines contemporary works with world premieres and runs throughout the season from September to May.
The theater was founded in 1979 by Barbara Abrahamian, John Briggs, and Mark Kaufman, presenting its first production, The Passion of Dracula, at Mahoney Hall. The company later relocated to its permanent home in Liberty Hall, where it became established as a cornerstone of Lowell's cultural landscape.
The theater presents seven productions yearly that often engage with contemporary issues and local stories. This focus on current works and fresh voices shapes the program and draws audiences seeking honest, thought-provoking theater experiences.
The venue offers various ways to attend performances, with reduced pricing for special nights and audience groups such as educators, veterans, and students. Located in the heart of Lowell, the theater is easy to reach and serves as a natural anchor point for exploring the city.
The Patriot Program, launched in 2015, invites theater professionals from across the country to settle in for extended residencies to develop and present new works. This residency initiative continuously brings fresh perspectives and outside expertise to Lowell.
