Handley Library, Public library in Winchester, United States.
Handley Library is a public library in Winchester, Virginia, built from limestone in the Beaux-Arts style. It sits on an octagonal foundation topped by a central dome, and its main entrance features three decorative arches facing the corner of Braddock and Piccadilly Streets.
John Handley, an Irish-American coal magnate, left funds in 1895 to build a library for the people of Winchester. The building was completed in the early 20th century and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
For many years, the library served only part of Winchester's population, until it opened to all residents in 1953 regardless of race. Today it functions as a gathering place where locals come to read, attend events, and meet, giving visitors a sense of everyday city life.
The main entrance with its three arched doors is easy to spot from the corner of Braddock and Piccadilly Streets. Visiting on a weekday gives you the best chance of finding all areas of the building open and in full use.
Seen from above, the building is said to resemble an open book, with the dome representing the spine and the two wings acting as the covers. This was a deliberate choice by the architects, linking the shape of the building directly to its purpose.
