Hotel Windermere stands 12 stories tall at the intersection of 56th Street and Cornell Avenue, offering 482 guest rooms and 200 apartments within its structure.
The hotel opened in 1892 for the Columbian Exposition and underwent reconstruction in 1924 by Rapp & Rapp architects, dividing it into Windermere East and West buildings.
The establishment attracted notable guests including John Rockefeller, Philip Roth, George Burns, and various American football teams throughout its operating years.
The Windermere East building received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and continues to function as an apartment complex.
A tunnel connected the two Windermere buildings until 1959, when the West section was removed to create a parking area.
