Shoreland Hotel, Renaissance Revival hotel in Hyde Park, Chicago, US
The Shoreland Hotel features a thirteen-story structure with terra-cotta exterior, gargoyles, stonework details, and a crystal ballroom overlooking Lake Michigan.
Opening in 1926, hotel owner Harry Fawcett invested 2 million dollars in furnishings to create 1,000 guest rooms across 13 floors of luxury accommodations.
The hotel hosted notable figures including Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Al Capone, Jimmy Hoffa, Elvis Presley, and economist Milton Friedman during its operation.
The building transformed from a luxury hotel to University of Chicago student housing in the 1970s before converting into 330 modern apartments in 2013.
The Shoreland made history as the largest hotel in the United States under female leadership when Marge Bellows assumed ownership during the mid-20th century.
