Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel

Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel, Research wind tunnel at Virginia Tech, United States.

The Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel is a research facility with a 1.85-meter square test chamber. It can generate air speeds up to 80 meters per second for aerodynamic experiments.

The tunnel was built by NASA in 1940 and transferred to Virginia Tech in 1958. This move established the university as a center for advanced aeronautical research.

The facility serves as a hands-on learning center where engineering students work directly with aerodynamic testing and real research methods. They gain practical experience that textbooks alone cannot provide.

The tunnel is used for wind turbine testing and other major research projects conducted by leading industrial companies. Plan ahead and contact the university beforehand, as this is an active research facility with limited public access.

The facility includes a Hybrid Anechoic Test Section for testing wind turbines under realistic operating conditions. This makes it the largest university-based system in the country for measuring wind turbine noise.
