Council Grove Lake

Council Grove Lake, body of water

Council Grove Lake is a large reservoir in central Kansas created by an earth dam that stretches nearly a mile long and rises about 96 feet high. The waterbody is fed by two main arms, the Neosho River entering from the northwest and Munkers Creek from the northeast, with shorelines featuring steep rocky areas and shallow mudflats.

The reservoir was developed in the early 1960s as a response to devastating floods in the early 1950s, with authorization provided by the Flood Control Act of 1950. Construction began in June 1960 and finished in October 1964, creating a water management facility that serves flood control and water supply for nearby communities.

The lake draws birdwatchers throughout the year, with migratory ducks and geese passing through in spring and fall while bald eagles perch in nearby trees during winter months. Local families use the shoreline parks for picnicking and camping as part of their outdoor traditions.

The lake is easily reached via U.S. Route 56 and Kansas Highway 177 running nearby, with several parking areas distributed around the grounds offering both water access and shaded spots. Boat ramps are designed for accessibility and information kiosks help visitors find their way while checking current water conditions before arrival.

The lake supports a variety of fish species including bass, catfish, crappie, and wiper that draw anglers year-round. A designated wildlife area established in 1965 encompasses forests, fields, and grasslands nearby, providing hunting opportunities for deer, turkey, and waterfowl.
