Thomas Hockley House, Victorian house near Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, United States.
Thomas Hockley House is a Victorian residential building located at the corner of 21st and Locust Streets. The facade features stone-bracketed bay windows and two Moorish arches framing the entrance porch.
Architect Frank Furness designed and completed this building in 1875 for Thomas Hockley, a lawyer who supported his architectural career. After major renovations in 1894, the structure was converted into an apartment building, a function it continues to serve.
The house displays a mix of materials in brownstone and brick red with gray accents, typical of Victorian design principles. These colored surfaces become visually striking as you walk past the structure.
The building sits at a busy intersection and is easy to locate on foot. Street access is straightforward, and the area around Rittenhouse Square offers many nearby cafes and shops to explore.
The main chimney extends from the south wall and flares outward at its top into a distinctive shape. Abstracted sunflowers are carved above the portals, an unexpected decorative touch that animates the facade.
