Foothills Open Space Preserve, Nature reserve in Palo Alto, United States

Foothills Open Space Preserve is a protected natural area in Palo Alto, California, covering forested slopes and deep ravines that are part of the Adobe Creek watershed. It sits next to Hidden Villa Ranch and borders Palo Alto's Foothills Park.

The land was acquired in the early 1970s after local residents pushed to protect it from development. The first portion was a donation, and the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has managed the site since 1974.

The hilltop at the end of the trail is where most visitors stop to look out over the South Bay and the hills to the east and south. The name of the preserve reflects its position along the lower slopes that mark the edge of the Santa Clara Valley.

The preserve is along Page Mill Road, about 3.5 miles (5.5 km) southwest of Highway 1-280, marked by a brown pipe gate. Only two parking spots are available roadside, so arriving early is a good idea. Visitors should bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and watch out for rattlesnakes and poison oak, especially in warmer months.

Although the preserve is close to the city, the short walk to the hilltop can reveal views of Mount Hamilton, Mission Peak, and the East Bay hills on clear days. There are no restrooms, no camping, and no bike paths, which sets it apart from most other open space areas in the region.
