Winnemac Park, Park on Chicago's North Side, US

Winnemac Park is a public park on Chicago's North Side, in Cook County, bordered by Damen, Foster, Leavitt, and Argyle streets. It features open grass fields, tree cover, baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, walking trails, a picnic area, and a gymnasium.

The park was founded in 1910, when the city of Chicago leased school land to create recreational space for the community. A major renovation in 1999 brought new trees, flower gardens, trails, fencing, and lighting.

The park has a teaching garden where visitors can learn about native plants and local gardening. In summer, outdoor movie nights and theater performances draw families from nearby streets.

The main entrance is on Leavitt Street, with parking spots and public transit options close by. During the warmer months the park stays open from early morning until late evening, so a visit fits into most schedules.

The park's name comes from Winamac, a Potawatomi leader whose name means 'catfish' in the Miami-Illinois language. The park shares its grounds with two neighboring schools, which gives the area a noticeably different rhythm on school days versus weekends.
