Kasteel De Borght

Kasteel De Borght is a rectangular castle set on a hill and surrounded by a moat, with corner turrets defining its outline. The grounds include a four-hectare park featuring gardens and walking paths throughout the estate.

The current building was constructed in 1860 on medieval foundations dating to the 15th century, replacing an earlier castle destroyed by fire in 1756. This 19th-century reconstruction followed Gothic Revival style preferences of that era.

The castle reflects architectural traditions of Belgian nobility, where Gothic Revival and Renaissance design elements blend together in the rooms and on the facade. Visitors can observe how these styles shaped the look of the building.

The castle is located at Lakenmakersstraat 8 in Mechelen and will open its grounds to visitors starting in 2027, though it will remain privately owned. Advance planning is recommended since current access may be limited.

The basement contains original features such as a wine cellar, while upper floors display mosaic floors and mirrored glass doors. These interior details reveal the craftsmanship of the building's original finishes.
