Hof van Kamerijk, Protected palace in Mechelen, Belgium.
Hof van Kamerijk is a Renaissance palace at Keizerstraat 3 located beside Sint-Pieters-en-Pauluskerk and opposite Hof van Savoye. After major restoration work, the facade now displays its original 15th-century character and the building serves as Mechelen's municipal theater.
Architect Antoon I Keldermans designed this palace in the late 15th century as a residence for royal guests, including the future Emperor Charles V. The building gained the name Keizershof and became a place where European royal families maintained their political and family interests.
The palace shows its noble past through the Renaissance facade that dominates Keizerstraat and reveals how important families organized their urban residences. Walking past it, you notice the grand entrance and symmetrical design that speak of power and refinement.
The palace now operates as a theater hosting performances and cultural events that visitors can attend. The restored exterior facade is visible from the street for those interested in seeing its architectural details without entering.
Margaret of York, an English princess who became a widow in 1477, chose this location as her residence and inadvertently created a hub where future European monarchs were raised. Her presence attracted other noble families and transformed the palace into a meeting point for dynastic interests.
