Westhoek

Westhoek is a region spanning western Belgium and northern France, featuring polders, coastal dunes, and wooded ridges. The landscape shifts between flat agricultural land near the coast and gently elevated forested areas inland.

The region became a major battlefield during World War I with intense fighting and heavy losses. Numerous military cemeteries and memorials throughout the area now mark this conflict-scarred past.

West Flemish dialect shapes daily life in the Belgian portion, while French is commonly heard in the cross-border communities. This linguistic variety appears in local signage, shop names, and how residents interact with each other.

The region is crisscrossed by an extensive network of cycling paths connecting historical sites, museums, and traditional villages. The flat to gently rolling terrain makes exploring by bicycle enjoyable and accessible for various fitness levels.

The area called Bachten de Kupe west of the Yser River preserves farmland where traditional cultivation methods have remained largely unchanged. These farms offer visitors a rare glimpse into the region's historical agricultural practices.
