Established in 1225 by Lüthold von Sumiswald, the castle included a hospital facility, which influenced its name Spittel, derived from the German word for hospital.
The structure holds Class B Swiss cultural property status and represents a significant example of medieval architecture in the Emmental region of Canton Bern.
The municipality of Sumiswald maintains the castle for public events, offering spaces for art exhibitions, wellness activities, and community gatherings.
Following its role as a regional administrative center from 1698 to 1798, the castle served as a retirement home until 2016.
