Schloss Spittel

Schloss Spittel is a medieval castle bearing traces of 18th-century reconstruction that rises above the Gruene river valley. The building displays a mix of older structures and later modifications that reflect its long history of use.

The castle was founded in 1225 by Luthold von Sumiswald and combined defensive and charitable functions from the start. Between 1698 and 1798 it served as a regional administrative center before later being used for residential purposes.

The castle takes its name from the hospital that once cared for the sick and served travelers passing through the region. This connection to care shapes how visitors understand the building and its purpose.
