Městská památková zóna Brno, Protected urban heritage area in central Brno, Czech Republic
The Brno municipal heritage zone is a protected area in central Brno that expands in a fan-shaped form from the west, north, and east around the city center. It encompasses selected districts and preserves the urban layout and architectural character that defines the downtown landscape.
The area reflects Brno's development as a major industrial center and former regional capital of Moravia during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Czechoslovakia periods. The municipal heritage protection was officially established in 2023 to safeguard this layered history.
The zone contains two national cultural monuments: Kounic Halls and Villa Tugendhat, with the latter being registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors can explore these landmarks as anchors of the city's cultural identity.
The best time to visit is during daytime when the architecture and urban design are clearly visible. The area is easily walkable, allowing visitors to explore different neighborhoods street by street at their own pace.
The initiative restored protection status to around 1,300 buildings in Brno that had lost their heritage designation due to an administrative error. This action prevented countless historically valuable structures from undergoing inappropriate modifications.
