Monheim am Rhein, Rhine riverside town in Mettmann district, Germany.
Monheim am Rhein is a town on the eastern bank of the Rhine in Mettmann district, North Rhine-Westphalia, between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen. The municipal area includes residential neighborhoods with single-family homes, green spaces along the river, and some commercial zones in the interior.
A fishing village from the 12th century grew under the rule of the Counts of Berg into a regional administrative seat. In the 19th century, industrial enterprises arrived and continue to shape the townscape today.
The name reflects the location by the river and the medieval past as a settlement within the Duchy of Berg, still visible in the old lanes of the core town. Residents walk and cycle along the Rhine promenade daily, while the old center with its timber-framed houses serves as a quiet residential area.
The town is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, especially along the paths by the Rhine. Visitors reach the area via regional trains and bus lines from the surrounding region.
At the southern town boundary stands a former Roman fort that was rebuilt into a medieval castle complex. The foundation walls from both periods survive today and reveal the long settlement history of the area.
