Waldstadion, Football stadium in Frankfurt-Süd, Germany
The Waldstadion is a football arena in the city forest of Frankfurt am Main with a retractable roof and space for 51,500 spectators across several tiers. The stands run close to the playing field and offer clear views of the action from all seats.
The venue opened in 1925 on a former shooting range and initially held 35,000 spectators. Over the following decades the facility underwent several reconstructions and expansions that shaped its current form.
Supporters of the local Bundesliga club gather here for home matches and fill the stands with chants and flags in the team colors. The atmosphere on match days shapes the entire neighborhood as thousands of fans from the city and region make their way to the venue.
Tram and bus stops nearby connect the grounds with different parts of Frankfurt. The entrances to the individual stands are signposted and can be reached on foot from the stops in a few minutes.
Between 1991 and 2007 the venue also hosted NFL Europa games when the Frankfurt Galaxy played their home matches in the arena. The playing field was then marked accordingly for American football and the facility served two different sports.
