Cologne Bonn Airport, Commercial airport in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Cologne Bonn Airport is a commercial airport in North Rhine-Westphalia that links Cologne and Bonn, featuring three parallel runways spread across roughly 4 square miles. The facility divides into two passenger terminals, a cargo center, and several maintenance areas arranged around the central apron.
The German Air Force established a military airfield here in 1938, which came under British administration after World War II. Civilian traffic began in 1950, and over the following decades the facility grew through additional terminals and infrastructure to its current size.
The airport bears the name of the first chancellor who came from the nearby region and spent part of his political career here. Many locals still simply call it Cologne/Bonn, using the older designation in everyday conversation and when giving directions.
Both terminals connect to a railway station with regional trains and high-speed services running directly to Frankfurt and other German cities. Motorway links lead to nearby city centers and connect the facility to the wider road network.
Operations run around the clock, and major cargo carriers use the facility as a European hub for express shipments and air freight. At night you often see heavy transport aircraft parked on the apron between passenger planes.
