Funtensee, Karst lake in Schönau am Königsee, Germany
Funtensee is a karst lake within Berchtesgaden National Park at about 1610 meters elevation, stretching 1400 meters long and 400 meters wide. The water sits in a natural depression formed by the limestone geology of the Alps.
The area was documented in 1385 as an alpine pasture supporting livestock herds. After farming ended in the mid-20th century, the region became part of the national park and shifted from rural use to visitor recreation.
The Kärlingerhaus lodge has served mountain travelers for generations, offering food and shelter within this remote setting. It functions as a gathering point where visitors experience the rhythm of alpine life in the high mountains.
Reaching the lake requires a hike of three to four hours via marked trails from nearby starting points in the mountains. Sturdy hiking boots and mountain experience are important, as the terrain is steep and weather can change rapidly at this elevation.
The lake sits in a basin that acts like a natural freezer, with trapped cold air creating extreme temperature conditions. This unusual microclimate makes it a place where nature's harshest conditions come into view.
