Saugasse

Saugasse is a mountain trail near Schönau am Königssee that winds through a narrow gorge with many switchbacks as it climbs. The route passes through steep Alpine terrain and connects different sections of the Berchtesgaden region.

The path developed as a traditional route connecting to Alpine pastures in higher elevations that herders and farmers used for generations. Over time the use of these areas changed, but the trail remained an important connection in the mountain region.

The trail forms part of the Berchtesgaden National Park network, representing traditional Alpine passage methods through challenging mountain terrain.

Hikers should bring sturdy footwear and sure-footedness as the trail is steep and sometimes exposed. Good navigation skills and proper gear for changing weather conditions are important for a safe ascent.

A distinctive section at mid-elevation is noticeably easier to walk than the rest of the trail and gives hikers a brief break from the steeper climb. This area stands out from the more demanding passages before and after it.
