Großer Hundstod

Großer Hundstod is a peak rising to 2,594 meters on the border between Bavaria and Salzburg, with limestone walls and steep rocky slopes forming its distinctive character. The massif extends across several ridge lines and displays the typical structure of the northern limestone Alps.

The mountain became part of Berchtesgaden National Park in 1978 when authorities designated the region for protection. Mountaineers have documented and maintained climbing routes to this peak since the 1800s.

The mountain hut keepers at Ingolstädter Haus maintain traditional hospitality practices, serving visitors with homemade meals and locally sourced refreshments throughout the hiking season. This continuation of alpine customs shapes the experience for everyone who visits the area.

Ingolstädter Haus lies below the summit and provides lodging and meals for hikers during summer months. Visitors should expect rugged terrain and bring appropriate gear along with sturdy footwear for the climb.

The summit offers views across both the German and Austrian sides of the border, making it a special place for cross-border hiking. On clear days visitors can see multiple neighboring mountain ranges stretching far across the valleys.
