Wimbachschloss

The Wimbachschloss sits at 937 meters elevation between the Hochkalter and Watzmann peaks in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The building features solid masonry walls with characteristic roof construction typical of alpine structures.

The lodge was built in 1784 by the last Prince Provost of Berchtesgaden and later used by the Bavarian royal family as a hunting retreat. The structure blends older construction elements with 19th-century upgrades made for royal use.

The lodge displays traditional Bavarian mountain building style with thick stone walls and steep roofs built to handle heavy snow. Visitors can see how people managed daily life in this remote alpine location.

The lodge is located along Wimbachweg 49 and is only accessible via a walking trail from the Wimbachbrücke parking area. The route takes about 90 minutes through forest over a forestry road open to foot traffic.

A memorial cross at the lodge honors 12 soldiers who died in a helicopter crash during a German-French mountain exercise in 1970. This monument stands as a quiet reminder of that tragic event that visitors encounter along the trail.
